Even as the Congress members were trying to corner the government on the issues of breach of privileges of members and price rise, the head of campaign committee of Uttarakhand Congress and former Chief Minister Harish Rawat launched an assault on the government on the issue of illegal mining from outside the assembly on Saturday. Rawat who had planned to hold a fast in front of the assembly on the issue was stopped by the policemen at Rajiv Nagar barrier. On being stopped Rawat rode pillion on a scooter and arrived at the gate of the assembly. On hearing about his arrival, Congress MLA Manoj Rawat and Harish Dhami came out of Vidhan Sabha. Attacking the government, Rawat said that he only wanted to stage a silent protest on illegal mining but the government got frightened and tried to stop him. He said that the government’s attitude has further increased his resolve. He said that rivulets and rivers of the state have been ravaged by large scale illegal mining. Rawat said that heavy machines are being used in illegal mining and the embankments of bridges are being excavated.
“An open loot of the mineral wealth of the state is being done. Who is behind this loot?’’ he asked.
