Harish Rawat takes out protest march in support of Haridwar farmers

In support of the demand to increase the compensation for the farmers in Haridwar district former chief minister Harish Rawat led a protest march to the residence of chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday. A large number of Congress workers led by Rawat participated in the march. The protesters were stopped by the police near Hathibadkala.
The protesters were shouting slogans against the policies of the government and were carrying sugarcane damaged by rains with them. The former CM attended the protest riding on a tractor. He said that the government should increase the compensation for the farmers affected by the recent natural disaster triggered by heavy rains in Haridwar. Rawat said that the compensation amount is a meagre Rs 1,100 per bigha which is an insult to the farmers. He also demanded that in view of the increasing prices of sugar in the international market the procurement price of sugarcane this time should be more than Rs 425 per quintal.
The former CM also demanded that the electricity and water bills of the crop cycle damaged by the rains should be waived off in Haridwar. The leader of opposition (LoP) in State Assembly Yashpal Arya, former Pradesh Congress Committee president Ganesh Godiyal, MLAs Mamta Rakesh, Furkan Ahmed, Anupama Rawat ,president of Uttarakhand Mahila Congress Jyoti Rautela, chief spokesperson of Uttarakhand Congress Garima Dasauni and large number of Congress leaders, workers and farmers were present in the protest.
