Welcoming the State High Court’s order on the appointment of Lokayukt, the former chief minister and the veteran Congress leader Harish Rawat said that the State government helmed by him had finalised the names of the chairman and members of the Lokayukt bench far back in 2016. “But the matter did not progress as then Governor did not give his assent,” he said. He further said that the appointment of a Lokayukt would help stem the tide of corruption in the State. “Corruption seems to have eaten its way deep into the State’s life and this disease must be treated properly,” he said. In a social media posting, the former CM said that resolved to appoint a Lokayukt during his tenure as the CM, they had sent the matter to then Governor for his approval. “But then Governor returned it with objections. Later, it was sent again to Raj Bhavan, but the final approval remained elusive,” he said and added that the recent High Court order on this long-pending matter has generated hope in the State.
