A day before start of the notified period of Kumbh Mela in Haridwar from April 1, the Uttarakhand high court directed the state government to increase the number of Covid tests in the Mela area to 50,000 daily. The standard operating procedures should also be followed strictly during the Kumbh, the court said.
During the hearing on the PIL regarding the condition of quarantine centres in the state, the petitioner on Wednesday told the court that the Kumbh Mela officer had done commendable work in Har Ki Paidi and the Kumbh Mela area but some works are yet to be completed in some Ghats. The condition of washrooms in some Ghats is not satisfactory, the petitioner said. On behalf of the state government, the court was informed that all works will soon be completed in the Mela area. The division bench of chief justice RS Chauhan and justice Alok Kumar Verma has set the next of hearing on the petition after two weeks.
It will be recalled that advocate Dushyant Mainali and Dehradun resident Sacchidanand Dabral had filed separate PILs in the HC regarding the condition of Covid hospitals and quarantine centres, assistance and better health facilities for migrants returning to Uttarakhand during the lockdown.
