The Uttarakhand High Court has issued notice to the Central government and the HMT management in a petition filed by the HMT workers union challenging the earlier decision of the High Court single bench. The bench of chief justice Vipin Sanghi and justice Alok Verma issued the direction while hearing the petition of the union seeking fulfillment of the conditions set for closure of the factory.
According to the case details, the Central government had given permission on November 17, 2016 for conditional closure of HMT Ranibagh factory. According to the policy decision of the cabinet committee on economic affairs headed by the Prime Minister, before closure of the factory the employees were to be given the payscale decided in 2007 and a voluntary retirement scheme package according to the same. However, the petitioners have stated that the HMT management did not fulfill this condition and shut down the factory. The HMT workers unions had first approached the High Court single bench against the factory management’s decision. However, the petition was rejected by the single bench. The union approached the division bench of the High Court to challenge this decision. Issuing notice to the Central government and HMT factory management, the court has set July 26 as the next date for hearing the petition.
