Taking cognisance of patients not receiving ultrasound and other medical facilities at the BD Pandey government district hospital in Nainital, the Uttarakhand High Court took up the matter in the form of a public interest litigation.
Hearing on the matter, the division bench of justice Sharad Kumar Sharma and justice Ravindra Maithani has ordered that action be taken against the official responsible and that a report be submitted in the court within three weeks. The court took up the matter as a PIL taking cognisance of complaints received regarding the district hospital. It was stated in the complaints that the ultrasound facility was not being provided to patients in the BD Pandey government district hospital. The patients were facing major inconvenience due to this and had to go to Haldwani to get ultrasound scans done. Further, it was stated that doctors were not visiting the hospital at designated times and there are other irregularities also in the hospital.
The court ordered that action should be taken against the official responsible. It also stated that it has been receiving complaints about various government hospitals in the State. Justice Sharma recalled that he was charged Rs 700 once when he had gone to the Pauri hospital to get a bandage applied. Employees in hospitals should discharge their duties responsibly. The hospital administration generally becomes active after the court takes cognisance, the court observed.
