HC rejects Muslim sides’ challenge to hearing Gyanvapi mosque case

In a setback to those who have been fighting legal battle to preserve the status qua of the Gyanvapi Mosque, the Allahabad High Court which had reserved its judgment on December 8 rejected the bunch of petitions filed by the Gyanvapi Masjid Management Committee and Sunni Waqf Board challenging the maintainability of the 1991 civil suit filed the Hindus on the ground that such suits could not be taken up in court thanks to the Places of Worship Act 1991. The court order also allowed the Varanasi district court to carry on with its hearing on the petitions filed related to the ownership of the place of worship. Referring to the question whether the Places of Worship Act 1991 could be applied to this case, the Allahabad High Court said in its order that it would be decided also.
