HC reserves judgement on death sentence to mother’s killer

Hearing the case of Haldwani resident Digar Singh who was sentenced to death by the court of the additional district judge for hacking his mother to death following a minor argument, the Uttarakhand high court has reserved its judgement. The case was taken up for hearing by the bench of acting chief justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra and justice NS Dhanik. Earlier, the lower court had sentenced the Gaulapar area resident to death under section 302 of IPC along with Rs 10,000 fine and under section 307 of IPC, it had sentenced him to life imprisonment with Rs 5,000 fine with six months of additional prison if unable to pay the fine. The lower court had sent its judgement to the high court for confirmation.
According to the case details, Shobhan Singh had lodged a complaint in the Chorgalia police station on October 7, 2019. The complainant had stated that his son Digar Singh had had a minor argument with his mother Jomati Devi. Enraged following the argument, Digar had killed his mother with a sharp weapon. He also attacked a neighbour and others with an axe and injured them when they had tried to intervene. During arguments in the lower court, the government witness told the court that on the day of the incident, the accused had held the hair of his mother in one hand and used an axe and a sickle to cut her throat. Digar’s father and many others stood as witnesses against him during the trial.
