The Uttarakhand High Court has directed the State government to submit a detailed report by November 18 on the steps taken in the State for protection of transgenders. The bench of acting chief justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari and justice Vivek Bharti Sharma issued this direction while hearing a petition regarding legal provisions in the State for protection and safety of transgenders.
During the hearing on Thursday, the counsel representing the State government informed the court that an Act has been made for the rights and protection of transgenders. In addition to this, transgender protection cells have also been formed at the State and district levels. In the past, the High Court had issued directions for preparing rules and an Act for the transgenders.
According to the case details, Dehradun based transgender Nisha Chauhan had filed this petition seeking safety for transgenders. The petitioner has contended that she is under threat from transgender Rajni Rawat and her followers. She has stated that she was assaulted by Rawat’s followers in 2018, 2023 and this year too. They also snatched money from her. Considering this, the petitioner has sought protection for herself in addition to seeking legal provisions for protection and safety of transgenders. Chauhan has stressed that transgenders too are a part of society.
