The Uttarakhand high court has sought a reply from the State government in two weeks regarding illegal fishing in Bhimtal and Naukuchiyatal lakes in Nainital district. This direction was issued by the division bench of chief justice Vipin Sanghi and justice RC Khulbe while hearing the public interest litigation filed in the matter.
According to the case details, Bhimtal resident Sanjeev Pandey filed a public interest litigation stating that fishing in Bhimtal and Naukuchiyatal lakes was prohibited but fishes are being poached illegally since the Covid lockdown. The petitioner had complained about this to the Fisheries department at Bhimtal in Nainital district but no action was taken on it. Pandey approached the high court due to his complaint to the relevant authority being ignored. In his petition, he has requested that illegal fishing be stopped in both the said lakes. He said that varied fishes live in these two lakes and are a vital part of the ecology while the illegal poaching is threatening the ecological balance of the sites.
