HC seeks State’s reply in death of inmate in Haldwani jail

The Uttarakhand high court has sought a reply from the State government in the case of the death of an inmate in the Haldwai jail. The single bench of Justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra has directed the government to submit its reply by August 30 and state whether the case has been probed by a magistrate.
According to the case details, Gulnaz Parveen had filed a petition in the high court stating that her father was sentenced by the court in Kashipur under IPC section 138. He had been jailed in the Haldwani jail. However, about 10 to 12 days after the sentencing he was found dead in the jail. The post mortem report revealed that five of his ribs were broken. The police filed a case after 22 days, stated the petitioner. She has sought that the incident should be investigated by a magistrate. In addition to seeking criminal cases against the guilty, the petitioner has also sought Rs one crore compensation.
