At a time when the police are claiming to be taking effective action against substance abuse and smuggling, the Uttarakhand High Court has stayed action against a university student caught with charas by the police in Dehradun. The court has observed that the police have misused their authority. A youth was caught with charas on June 16 by the Clement Town police in Dehradun. The police booked him and stated that he was caught with the contraband in the jungle. On being asked by his father, the youth said that he was caught by the police from a shop and a female friend who was with him was let go by the police after challan. The youth’s father secured the CCTV camera footage which showed the police taking his son from a shop. His friend was let off with a Rs 500 challan. The youth secured bail on this basis from the lower court. The youth then approached the High Court seeking quashing of the FIR. The court has stayed action against him and sought a report from the investigating officer.
