Health dept to buy 250 dandi kandi for pregnant women

In latest news from Doon, to facilitate movement of the pregnant women from the remote, mountainous villages to the nearest road heads on way to health facilities for delivery, the State health department is all set to purchase 250 dandi- kandi with funds to be allotted by the National Health Mission. Presently, 3000 dandi- kandis would be operated in the mountainous regions, the health department sources said, adding that the dandi kandi operators are being paid Rs 400 per person. The dandi kandis to be purchased would be handed over the village panchayats, sources further said. The State health secretary R Rajesh Kumar said that once the pregnant women are carried to the road head there would be ambulances ready to transport them to the nearest health facility. He further said that the department is taking all steps to facilitate institutional deliveries. “Things are improving across the State as currently 91 per cent of deliveries are institutional deliveries,” he claimed, adding that cases of infant mortality in Uttarakhand are declining.
