Kumar visits GDMC on Rakshabandhan,assures security for female staff

Health secretary R Rajesh Kumar celebrated the festival of Rakshabandhan with the resident doctors, nurses and female staff members at the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital here on Monday. He interacted with the hospital staff and heard their grievances.The female staff members told the secretary that adequate security in the night shift should be provided. They demanded that male and female police personnel should remain deployed round the clock in the hospital.
The secretary assured them that the department will soon start the process for setting up a police post in the hospital. Kumar said that letters to the State home secretary and director general of Police (DGP) in this regard will be sent. He said that ensuring the security of female doctors, nurses and other women staff working in the hospitals is the priority of the department and added that soon a standard operating procedure (SOP) for ensuring security in the hospitals will be formulated. The director medical education Dr Ashutosh Sayana said that ensuring safety of women is one of the priorities of the government. He also assured the hospital staff that proper security arrangements will be made. The Principal of the GDMC Dr Geeta Jain that the female staff of the hospital is happy as the health secretary has assured their security on the occasion of Rakshabandhan.
The visit of the health secretary to the biggest government hospital of the State on the day of Rakshabandhan assumes signifiance in the wake of the recent rape and brutal murder of a female doctor in Kolkata. After the visit of the secretary the resident doctors said that an atmosphere of fear prevailed in the hospital after the Kolkata incident but the assurance of the secretary has helped in easing things. The medical superintendent of GDMC Dr Anurah Agarwal, Dr Dhananjay Dobhal, Dr M K Pant, Dr Anil Joshi, Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mahendra Bhandari and others were present on the occasion.
