Heat wave assault: Dehradun sizzles hot at 43 degree Celsius

Thursday, 30 May 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The maximum temperature in provisional State capital Dehradun surged to 43 degrees Celsius on Wednesday afternoon. The unprecedented increase in the temperature created heat wave conditions in the area. The markets remained deserted during the day time as people preferred to remain indoors to save themselves from the assault of intense heat. The data of the department of meteorology shows that the maximum temperature in Dehradun was seven degrees above the normal temperature on Wednesday.

The city recorded a minimum of 24.4 degree Celsius which is two degrees above the normal temperature. Pantnagar recorded a maximum of 42 degree Celsius while Mukteshwar and New Tehri recorded maximum temperatures of 29.5 and 31.6 degree Celsius respectively. It is for the eighth time in the month of May when the mercury has surged past 40 degree Celsius mark in Dehradun.

“I have never experienced such an intense heat wave in Dehradun in my life. The unplanned development, large scale destruction of forests and creation of jungles are responsible for this pathetic condition,’’ said Surendra Rawat, a resident of Defence Colony.

The weathermen have predicted light to moderate rain / thunderstorm at many places in Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, Almora, Champawat and Pithoragarh districts and at a few places in Uttarkashi, Tehri, Chamoli and Nainital districts and at isolated places in Dehradun and Pauri districts of Uttarakhand on Thursday. Dry weather is likely to prevail in plain districts of Uttarakhand.
