Heavy rain alert issued for eight districts

Even as heavy rain caused considerable disruption in Dehradun on Tuesday night and Wednesday, the state meteorological centre has issued an alert regarding the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall with intense spells likely to occur at isolated places in Dehradun,

Haridwar, Pauri, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Champawat, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts on Thursday. Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning are likely to occur at isolated places in these districts.  

Further, light to moderate rain/thundershowers likely to occur at most places in Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Champawat, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts and at a places in the remaining districts of the state. In Dehradun, heavy to very heavy rain/thundershowers are likely to occur in some areas while the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be about 30 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius respectively. Meanwhile, about 89 millimetres of rain was recorded in Dehradun from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM on Wednesday causing considerable disruption in various areas of the city and suburbs.

A total of 88 motor roads are blocked in various districts. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), a total of eight rural motor roads are currently blocked in Dehradun district. In Uttarkashi district, the national highways to Gangotri and Yamunotri are open while three rural motor roads are blocked. The national highway to Badrinath is open in Chamoli district though the Joshimath-Malari state highway and six rural motor roads are blocked.

Two state highways, four main district roads and 29 rural motor roads are blocked in Pauri district while in Tehri district the Rishikesh-Srinagar/Badrinath national highway 58 is blocked by debris near Totaghati apart from nine rural motor roads also blocked in the district. Similarly, three rural motor roads are blocked in Bageshwar district and five in Nainital. The Tanakpur-Champawat national highway is blocked at Swala while four rural motor roads are also blocked in Champawat. In Pithoragarh district, three border roads and nine rural motor roads are blocked.
