Heavy rain causes considerable damage in Joshimath region

The national highway to Badrinath in Chamoli district was blocked for hours at various locations following heavy rain in the region since Saturday night. Damage to farm land and some buildings was also reported from the Thaig region due to heavy rain. The local authorities provided some relief to the pilgrims and travelers who had to face inconvenience due to the blockages. The authorities distributed relief material to travelers stuck on the highway due to heavy debris near Tangni while a boulder falling on a mechanical excavator near Marwadi also resulted in a blockade which lasted some hours.

Heavy rain is being experienced in this region since late on Saturday night which has caused considerable damage in some areas. The national highway and branch roads were blocked at various locations. Agricultural land was reported to be destroyed while one cowshed and a toilet were damaged due to heavy rain in the Thaig village in Joshimath block. The bridle path to the village has been damaged along with the motor road leading to the village. The villagers have informed the local administration about the damage in the village, adding that some homes are in a vulnerable situation. The motor road leading to the Urgam valley was also blocked at several locations by debris. Sources state that this has resulted in more than one dozen villages losing link with the main road. Apart from this landslide was also reported from the disaster affected areas of Joshimath town. Sinhdwar and Sunil wards were reported to be affected in the town.
