Heavy rain & flood damages Naugaon in Uttarkashi

Heavy rains caused various mountain streams in the Naugaon area of Uttarkashi district to flood on Saturday evening. Locals said that the flood and debris caused considerable damage to farms and apple orchards though there were no immediate reports of any human casualties. Coming to know about the incident, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami talked to the district magistrate Prashant Arya and directed him to ensure swift rescue and relief operations. 

According to district authorities, heavy rain in the area above Naugaon caused various gaderas (mountain streams) to flood in and around Naugaon. The water level rose suddenly in the Muradi Khadd, Naugaon Market Khadd, Devalsari Khadd and Sholi Khadd.

Information was also received about a house in Devalsari Khadd was buried by debris through all members of the family had evacuated to a safer location before disaster struck. On receiving information about the incident, the DM directed rescue and relief teams comprising Revenue department team, police, National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, Fire and ambulances to reach the incident site. The Public Works Department has been directed the reopen the roads blocked by debris while the affected families have been asked to remain in safe locations by the district administration.

Earlier, the heavy rain and resulting flood caused considerable panic among the locals who claimed that farmlands and apple orchards were damaged while some two-wheelers were also swept away in the flooded streams.

District officials said that the damage caused by the incident is being assessed. Priority is being accorded to take the affected families to safer locations and provide them with food, drinking water and other essential items.
