Heavy rain forecast on July 19 & 20, CM directs officials to remain alert

With vigorous monsoon conditions forecast by the meteorological centre in the State from July 18 to 22, peaking on July 19 and 20, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed all the district magistrates to remain alert. The meteorological centre has forecast that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely on July 19 in the districts of Kumaon and adjoining districts of Kumaon with extremely heavy rainfall also likely at some places in Champawat, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar and Pauri districts. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also forecast on July 20 with Dehradun, Tehri and Haridwar districts also likely to experience considerable activity.

On Sunday, Dhami directed the two commissioners and all district magistrates to remain alert for dealing with any disaster related challenge. He said that alertness should be observed at every level, adding that all departments should work in coordination.

He said tha geo-tagged mechanical excavators should be deployed and ready at all times in places vulnerable to disasters. He said that teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed, adding that rescue and relief efforts should be undertaken with minimum response time in case of any disaster. Disruption in road connectivity and supply of electricity and water caused by rain or landslide should be restored as early as possible. The CM also appealed to the tourists and general public to stay away from rivers and seasonal streams in view of the heavy rain forecast. According to officials, a total of 396 mechanical excavators and other machinery have been deployed by the Public Works Department on various routes. The Irrigation department is consistently monitoring the water level in rivers at 23 locations and in barrages and dams at 14 sites. Flood control rooms are operating in all districts in addition to the central flood control centre in Dehradun.The Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan and Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited have also made arrangements for water supply and power supply respectively considering the possibility of inclement weather. The officials further said that the Health department has made arrangements in all the 13 districts to provide 24×7 medical treatment.
