Heavy rainfall hits life, vehicular traffic in Uttarakhand

Heavy rains affected the vehicular traffic and took a toll on the roads of the State on Wednesday. The incessant rains resulted in blocking of 127 roads across the State. Initially, 179 roads were blocked on Wednesday out of which, authorities resumed traffic on 52 roads till late evening. According to the data provided by the government, several routes remained blocked including eight roads in Chamoli, eight rural roads in Champawat, seven roads in Pithoragarh, four roads each in Dehradun and Pauri, two roads each in Bageshwar and Rudraprayag, two rural roads each in Tehri and Uttarkashi, and one state road and two rural roads in Nainital districts.
Routes leading to Char Dham shrines also remained blocked, most of which were opened by the evening. The Badrinath National Highway remained blocked for a few hours due to incessant rain which was reopened later. Besides this, roads near Bajpur, Chhinka Hathi Pahad and Taiya bridge in Chamoli district due to incessant rain since late night on Tuesday, as per the officials. The traffic movement resumed by 9.30 AM due to which devotees and tourists going to Badrinath Dham, Hemkund Sahib and Valley of Flowers were able to continue their journey.
Besides this, heavy rainfall also severely damaged the power line of 17 kilowatts between Joshimath and Pandukeshar which affected the power supply of 17 nearby villages. The power supply was resumed by 5:30 PM. Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are also likely to occur in several districts on Thursday too and the State administration has directed five districts- Tehri, Dehradun, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar and Pauri to stay alert and prepared to tackle any possible disaster.
