Heavy rains bring miseries in U’khand; roads blocked, houses collapse, five dead

Heavy to very heavy rain in many districts of the State resulted in large scale damage to life and property on Wednesday. Reports of landslide and water logging are being reported from many areas of the State.
Two siblings were killed and a third got injured in a landslide in Gaurikund village of Rudraprayag district in the wee hours of Wednesday amid incessant rains when the house they were sleeping in caved in. This was the second landslide in Gaurikund in five days. The spot where this landslide occurred is just half a kilometre away from the place where three persons were killed and 20 others went missing in a landslide that occurred on August 4.
Informing about the incident, the district disaster management officer, Nandan Singh Rajwar said that the house was hit by a landslide from the top of the hill burying four family members in debris. The mother of the three children Janaki was able to emerge unhurt out of the debris but the children got buried. He said that on getting information about the landslide, rescue teams from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) along with police officials and district administration reached the spot.
The team pulled out the children from under the debris and took them to a government hospital where doctors declared Pinky (5) and her younger sibling dead while the third child Sweety (8) is under treatment for severe injuries. The family living in the house was from Nepal and the children’s father Satyaraj, who is a labourer, had gone to his village in Nepal, said Rajwar. Besides this, a woman named Payal (30) died and a man named Krishna Singh sustained serious injuries after a massive rock fell on a bus near Dabarkot on the Yamunotri National Highway in Uttarkashi.
The officials said that the bus was going from Jankichatti to Barkot when the incident happened. The injured were referred to a higher centre in Dehradun. Besides this, several areas in Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital remained heavily waterlogged due to incessant rain. A man was also reported dead in Gadarpur tehsil of the district. Besides this, a man also died in Nainital after he reportedly slipped on a muddy road.
