Heavy rains trigger trial of death, destruction in U’khand

The landslides and deluge triggered by the heavy rains resulted in the death of 23 people in different parts of Uttarakhand on Tuesday. As per the information available eight persons are reported missing and many others have suffered injuries.
Nainital district was the most affected by the torrential rain and widespread damage to lives and property was reported from here. The administration reported 18 deaths till late Tuesday evening while five were missing and two got injured. In Ramgarh village of Bhawali Tehsil, nine persons died and one was injured after the cloudburst on Tuesday. Seven people were also reported to be trapped under the debris after a house collapsed in Chaukhuta village of Dhari Tehsil on Tuesday morning due to torrential rain. The authorities have recovered two dead bodies till late Tuesday evening. In the Totapani village of Mukteshwar, a house collapsed due to incessant rainfall while five were found dead and one injured. Due to a landslide in the Kainchi Dham area of Khairna Tehsil, a hut collapsed in which two persons were reported dead. Eight roads and some national highways also remain blocked across the district. The bridge over Gaula River that connects Haldwani to Almora and Ranikhet also collapsed due to the rising water level in the river. A portion of the railway track along the banks of the Gaula River also washed away due to the overflowing river. The authorities reportedly rescued hundreds of people and vehicles stuck in various locations of the Nainital district due to the inclement weather. Besides this, two persons were found dead in Almora, one in Champawat while one was swept away with water in Udham Singh Nagar district while many were found injured.
