The police on Friday had arrested a 33-year-old man in connection with the murder of a 72-year-old woman at her residence in Raipur. The accused worked as a helper at a bookshop owned by the victim’s husband. According to the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Pramendra Singh Dobal, the incident came to light on September 3 after the victim’s husband Dinesh Bansal informed police that his wife Rekha Bansal was lying unconscious with injuries on her face. Police reached the residence, where a 108 ambulance team declared her dead.
Dobhal reached the spot and directed the officers to form teams to identify and arrest the accused. The CCTV camera footage from routes around the crime scene were examined and surveillance and informers were activated during the investigation. The investigation led to the arrest of Vineet Kumar, a native of Uttarkashi. The SSP said that Kumar had known the Bansal family for about 15 years and worked as a helper at their bookshop. He was also employed as a night security guard through a private agency.
During interrogation, Kumar told police that some of his wages were pending and that he had repeatedly sought payment from Bansal. Dobal said that he went to the Bansal residence on Dinesh’s scooter on the day of the incident and entered through the rear door, which he knew was usually open. An argument broke out after Kumar demanded his pending wages. He hit Bansal’s wife on the face with a metal kada he was wearing, injuring her cheek and nose. When she shouted, he smothered her mouth with his hand, resulting in her death.
Dobhal said that Kumar then removed a gold bangle worn by the woman and fled. He changed his clothes at a guest house to avoid identification. Police recovered the gold bangle, the bangle used in the assault and a mobile phone from Kumar. A case has been registered under Sections 103(1), 309(4) and 117(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The accused will be produced before a court, Dobal said.
