In breaking news, the former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren who had been languishing in Birsa Munda jail in Hatwar since the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested him under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act on January 31 has been granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court in the land grab case. Notably, the Supreme Court had refused to grant him interim bail for campaigning for his party in the Lok Sabha election.
The probe against Soren, who put in his papers as the CM before his arrest, pertains to an 8.86-acre land in Ranchi which, as per the ED charge, had been illegally acquired by him. He had appealed for bail before a special court in Ranchi on April 16, alleging that his arrest was politically motivated and part of a vicious conspiracy hatched by the BJP to coerce him into joining the saffron party.
