On the directions of chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Food Safety and Drug Administration department has established a high tech laboratory for testing samples of medicines, medical equipment and cosmetics in Dehradun. These samples are being tested using modern machines in the laboratory with the facility of online certification also available. The Food Safety and Drug Administration commissioner R Rajesh Kumar said that this laboratory is likely to get recognition from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) in the near future. Following this, the report from this laboratory will be recognised across the world. Kumar further said that this lab will further speed up the testing of drugs, medical equipment and cosmetic samples. This will enable strict action against the companies manufacturing spurious and adulterated products, he said.
According to officials, the high tech laboratory has been prepared in the compound of the Food Safety and Drug Administration at Danda Lakhond on Sahastradhara Road. This facility was constructed on the directions of the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. Drug controller Tajbar Singh Jaggi informed that this laboratory has been built at a cost of Rs seven crore with the assistance of the Government of India. Pharmaceutical and injectable medical devices are tested in this laboratory in addition to the testing of cosmetics. He further informed that all relevant products manufactured in India are tested in this laboratory. Jaggi said that the load of testing such samples used to be handled in the State by the laboratory in Rudrapur. However, with the opening of the laboratory in Dehradun the testing of such samples will be expedited. The Food Safety and Drug Administration is consistently conducting campaigns in the State against those indulging in adulteration and selling spurious products. The officials state that they are making all possible efforts to check the producing and marketing of spurious drugs. More than 2,000 tests have been conducted in the new laboratory in Dehradun so far, the officials said. The facility includes five labs including a chemical testing lab, minor, major, cosmetic and microbiology labs.
