Higher areas witness snowfall, rain in the plains

Meteorological centre forecasts dry weather in State today

 Most parts of the State experienced light to moderate rain and snowfall on Monday. While rainfall was experienced in the plans and some mountainous regions, snowfall was reported in high altitude areas in various mountainous districts. The weather is expected to remain clear across the State on Tuesday.

In the Chamoli district, snowfall was reported in Badrinath, Hemkund, Auli, Valley of Flowers and the Niti valley among other places while Joshimath experienced rain. Two to three feet of snow was reported in Badrinath. The snowsports destination Auli also experienced snowfall but the number of tourists arriving here is small. Till the previous year, tourists used to throng Auli after snowfall but the number of visitors has dropped considerably after land subsidence in nearby Joshimath.

Meanwhile, the State meteorological centre has forecast that dry weather is likely to prevail in the districts today. The centre has issued a warning regarding the possibility of dense fog likely to occur in some parts of the plains especially in Haridwar district during the morning hours. The provisional State capital Dehradun is forecast to experience mainly clear skies with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to be about 22 degrees Celsius and nine degrees Celsius respectively on Tuesday.

The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in parts of the State on Monday were 17.2 degrees Celsius and 12 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun, 18.8 degrees Celsius and 8.1 degrees Celsius in Pantnagar, 7.7 degrees Celsius and 6.7 degrees Celsius in Mukteshwar and 7.1 degrees Celsius and 3.8 degrees Celsius respectively in New Tehri. While Dehradun and Pantnagar recorded one millimetre of rain each, there was 8.3 millimetres rain in Mukteshwar, 11.9 millimetres in New Tehri, 21 millimetres in Chaukhutiya, 20 millimetres in Bhikiyasain, 19.5 millimetres each in Thalisain and Pandukeshwar, 14 millimetres in Uttarkashi and Agastyamuni, 13 millimetres in Pithoragarh and 12 millimetres each in Sonprayag and Pauri.
