Highway to Indo-China border reopened to traffic
Tuesday, 26 October 2021 | PNS | Joshimath
The Malari highway connecting Joshimath to the Indo-China border region in the high altitude area of Chamoli district has been reopened for traffic after about one week. The reopening of this important highway has brought considerable relief to the villagers, army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel in the region.
It will be recalled that following heavy rains on October 17, the Malari highway had been blocked at 18 locations between Joshimath and Malari. At some places, the road had been completely destroyed. As soon as the weather cleared, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) began work to facilitate reopening of this crucial highway. After considerable effort, this road was reopened for traffic late on Sunday night.
The BRO commander Manish Kapil said that 15 machines and 200 labourers had been deployed for work to reopen this highway. With this road being reopened, vehicular traffic to the villages in the region and the Indo-China border area has now resumed.
