The Himalayan Hospital organised an awareness campaign to mark World Vitiligo Day on Tuesday. During the campaign, patients and their attendees received information about the symptoms, treatments and myths associated with vitiligo. Speaking on the occasion, head of the hospital’s dermatology department Dr Rashmi Jindal said that people with vitiligo often face social ostracisation due to misconceptions about the disease. She said that vitiligo, also known as leukoderma, does not hinder a person’s daily activities and is not contagious. Apart from this, Dr YS Bisht explained that modern medical science provides various options for treating white spots, including surgery with skin grafting. Further, Dr Samarjit Roy highlighted the need to dispel myths about vitiligo, such as the belief that it is untreatable or related to leprosy and that it spreads through touch or by consuming white foods like milk, yogurt and cheese. Additionally, other doctors educated patients about the symptoms of vitiligo through a poster exhibition as part of the awareness campaign.
