The doctors at Himalayan Hospital claimed to have successfully conducted Endovascular Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) on a patient for the first time in the health facility’s history.

Speaking of the specific surgery, Dr Chandra Mohan Belwal of the cardiology department of the hospital who was a member of the doctors’ team that conducted the surgery said that the patient Ramesh Sharma, resident of Udham Singh Nagar, had angioplasty done on him for his heart complications at the same hospital a year ago. “He was brought to the hospital’s cardiology OPD earlier this month with abdominal and lower limb pain. Detailed investigation revealed that his aorta, which is the largest artery of the body, had ballooned in its lower part and was also leaking blood in the abdomen, hampering normal blood flow to the lower limbs.  CT scan also showed that his arteries to lower limbs had critically narrowed,” he said.

He further said that this disease is called abdominal aortic aneurysm which can be treated only by open surgery. “However, in view of the risk involved, the patient was given the option of EVAR in which arteries in the lower abdomen and upper parts of thighs are opened.  As it is a complex surgery, we discussed things with the patient and his family members. Finally, the patient was taken up for EVAR and the surgery which lasted for six hours proved successful,” he said, adding that this type of surgery gives patients immediate relief from life-threatening complications like rupture of aneurysm and restores normal blood flow to the lower limbs.
