Home Guards were deployed on 17 key locations across the city on Saturday as part of efforts to curb begging in Dehradun. The personnel were deployed at major intersections including Dilaram Chowk, Ballupur Chowk, Saharanpur Chowk, ISBT, Railway Station and other locations after the recent orders of the Dehradun district magistrate Savin Bansal. The Home Guards have been stationed at these crossings on a rotational basis to keep a sharp watch on any begging activities, as per DM. He has also directed the district probation officer to expedite action by collaborating with all departments concerned to curb child begging.
He also informed that dedicated patrolling vehicles will soon be introduced to effectively tackle the issue. The regular patrolling will ensure 24-hour surveillance to break the cycle of begging. Besides this, children found engaged in begging will also be enrolled in intensive care centres, where they will receive proper education in a conducive learning environment. Bansal has also instructed a joint operation involving the Labour department, the Women Empowerment and Child Development department, Police, Child Welfare Committee and registered self-help groups to combat begging. This initiative is set to provide a long-term solution, offering education and support to the children involved, ultimately aiming for a complete rehabilitation of those caught in the cycle of begging, as per the DM.
