Horse owners in livelihood crisis following riding ban

In latest news from Uttarakhand, after the landslide that occurred a fortnight ago at Tiffin Top– one of the major tourist spots of the town- the Nainital district administration has completely banned horse riding for the safety of the people. However, on the flipside, this order has landed the horse owners in livelihood crisis.
Notably, since the British period, horses kept operating on a stretch of four kms from Barapathar to Tiffin Top. At present, about 94 horse owners earn their livelihood by providing horse riding to tourists. They are now facing grim livelihood crisis. They served a memorandum to the sub-divisional magistrate, urging him to allow them to carry on with their profession on the two-km stretch from Barapathar to Land’s End. But the administration is yet to respond to this demand.
They warned they would be forced to launch peaceful agitation if the administration does not accept their demand. The SDM Pramod Kumar, on the other hand, said that he would take up the matter with the district magistrate DM Vandana Singh and then things would be decided.
