Ignoring traffic rules at night can lead to fatal consequences: SSP

Following a tragic accident near ONGC intersection that claimed six young lives in the wee hours of Tuesday, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh has appealed to all citizens to abide by traffic rules irrespective of the time of the day. He raised serious concerns about the dangers of neglecting traffic rules at night. The accident, believed to have been caused by overspeeding, is a grim reminder of the risks involved in night time driving when many people mistakenly assume that fewer vehicles on the road means no need for caution. According to the SSP, a common issue is that drivers tend to drive at high speeds, fail to follow lane discipline, and even take shortcuts by driving on the wrong side of the road, all in the belief that roads are empty and there is no one to monitor them. He said that drivers should remember that fewer vehicles do not mean no vehicles. This misconception often leads to overspeeding and reckless manoeuvres, which can quickly turn deadly. The Dehradun superintendent of police (City) Pramod Kumar said that one of the most overlooked aspects is the frequent operation of heavy vehicles like trucks on the road at night. The recent accident, where an Innova collided with the rear of a container truck, highlights the severe consequences that can arise when drivers fail to accurately judge the speed and position of other vehicles. In this case, overspeeding and misjudgment during a crossing attempt are believed to have been contributing factors. He emphasised the need for drivers to stay vigilant and strictly adhere to traffic rules, regardless of the time of day. He urged everyone, particularly young drivers, to avoid overspeeding and prioritise safety over haste. Every life is valuable, and responsible driving can prevent such heartbreaking incidents, he added.
