IIT Roorkee holds workshop on drinking water & sanitation

A one-day workshop on current situation and future challenges in drinking water and sanitation was held by the department of Water Resources Development and Management at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, secretary Vini Mahajan was the chief guest at the inauguration of the workshop.
Speaking on the occasion, Mahajan said that under Swachchh Bharat Mission Phase-2 in 2019 the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the Jal Jeevan Mission under which every household in the country should have tap water. More than 50 per cent of the rural households have received rural water connection so far and it is expected that the task of providing water to every household will be completed by 2024. She said that it is good that IIT Roorkee has introduced a new M Tech programme on Drinking Water and Sanitation.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, IIT Roorkee director Ajit K Chaturvedi said that the workshop is a curtain-raiser for the newly introduced M Tech programme on Drinking Water and Sanitation by the Department of Water Resources Development and Management of the institute.
Speaking on the occasion, the institute’s Department of Water Resources Development and Management distinguished professor VP Singh discussed in detail the multidisciplinary aspects of safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) which are part of the sustainable development goals of the United Nations programme.
Earlier in his welcome address, the head of department Ashish Pandey informed that the MTech programme in Drinking Water and Sanitation has been developed to address the challenges in drinking water and sanitation faced by the Afro-Asian countries including India, in the water sector.
