IJU pushes for rights and safety of journalists

The national executive committee meeting of Indian Journalist Union (IJU) began in Dehradun on Thursday, chaired by IJU president K Sreenivas Reddy in the presence of secretary general Balwinder Singh Jammu. The two-day event brought members of the journalistic fraternity from across the nation to discuss pertinent issues and achievements.
Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion, the State’s Forest minister Subodh Uniyal commended the union’s efforts and expressed his commitment to supporting journalists. He said that accommodation would be provided to visiting journalists in forest rest houses during their assignments. He also acknowledged the need to work towards the implementation of the Working Journalists Act, aiming to improve protections and benefits for media professionals.
During the meeting, Reddy said that the IJU has successfully established an independent office in New Delhi, a significant milestone after years of effort. The IJU also celebrated the achievement of its Telangana unit, which secured 37 acres of land for journalists’ housing, a goal pursued for 15 years.
IJU office bearers highlighted the urgent need to address threats to press freedom, attacks on journalists and the rise of misinformation.
