In latest news from Uttarakhand, illegal constructions have been going on in full swing in proximity to Bagirathi river despite the area being designated as eco-sensitive zone. There can be no construction within a radius of 100 meters of the river as per the National Green Tribunal order. Yet, this rule is being violated with impunity along river bank stretching from Gomukh to Chinyalisaur, from Gangotri to Harsil, Dharali, Jhala, Bhatwadi, Augi, Maneri, Netala, Ganeshpur, Gangori, Tekhala, Tiloth, Uttarkashi, Joshiada and Gyansu.
Local say that some unscrupulous builders are engaged in these illegal constructions in cahoots with a section of the administration. They view these activities with concern, believing that such activities, if not stopped right now, might threaten the river itself. Demanding administrative actions to stop such activities, some social organisations like the Civil Society Ganga Valley, Rashtriya Hindu Sangh and Himalaya Nagrik Drishti Manch Uttarkashi staged a sit- in at the Collectorate. Some of the Statehood activists are also raising their voice against such activities and demand stringent action.
When contacted, some senior administrative officers pleaded ignorance.
