Illegal ‘Mazar’ in GDMC hospital demolished

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

The district administration demolished the illegal mazar in the Government Doon Medical College hospital premises on Friday night. The said ‘mazar’ was built inside the hospital campus and occupied a considerable area of the largest and busiest government hospital in Uttarakhand, where both the public and the hospital personnel face issues, especially with limited parking space, due to the limited space in the establishment.

According to sources, a Rishikesh resident had filed a complaint on the Chief Minister helpline portal regarding the illegal encroachment on GDMC hospital premises. The Dehradun district administration conducted an inquiry into the complaint. The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun, Public Works Department, Revenue department and the GDMC hospital administration were involved in the probe which ascertained that the said religious structure was an encroachment. The authorities demolished the encroachment on Friday night.

According to sources, the space beneath the ‘mazar’ was found to be vacant after demolition, raising questions yet again at the proclivity to construct structures on religious basis for various purposes including what the State government has termed land Jihad.

It is pertinent to mention here that the demolition of this encroachment occupying considerable space in the State’s biggest government hospital is expected to benefit the public considerably. An official said on the condition of anonymity that the hospital personnel and public face issues while trying to park vehicles on the premises and the road outside suffers from chronic traffic congestion. The demolition of the encroachment occupying a major chunk of the hospital’s space is expected to free space which can now be used to park ambulances and other works, as deemed fit by the hospital administration.

It should be mentioned here that the State government has been demolishing illegal religious structures encroaching upon government property and public space across the State.
