Amid the escalating diplomatic row between the two countries, India has reportedly asked Canada to withdraw 41 of its diplomats from India by October 10. Notably, Canada has 62 diplomats posted in India at present. The India- Canada ties came under severe strain following the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations of “potential” involvement of Indian agents in the assassination of the alleged Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India, however, rejected the allegations, terming these as “absurd” and “motivated” and expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in a tit-for-tat move to Ottawa’s expulsion of an Indian official over the issue. Nijjar, the chief of the banned Khalistan Tiger Force, was gunned down by two masked men outside a gurdwara in Surrey in British Columbia of Canada on June 18.
