India secures top position in Asian fencing championship

The Asian Cadet Cup Fencing Championship concluded on Sunday at Indira Gandhi Sports Stadium, Gaulapar in Haldwani. Team India secured the first position in the tournament, which witnessed participation from over 200 players representing 17 Asian countries.
Sports minister Rekha Arya attended the closing ceremony, presented medals to winners and lauded the performance of Indian and Uttarakhandi players. She said that international sporting events in Uttarakhand are inspiring local youth and strengthening sports infrastructure. “Fencing is an ancient sport and Uttarakhand must emerge as a strong force in it. The government is committed to developing sports and providing athletes with rewards, jobs and better facilities,” she added.
Kumaon commissioner Deepak Rawat also felicitated the winners, noting that the event will give a fillip to sports in Uttarakhand. Several dignitaries, including officials from the Fencing Association of India and international representatives were present on the occasion.
