PIONEEREDGE NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun
The Uttarakhand government has given its acceptance in principle to the proposal to hand over the operation of Chinyalisaur (Uttarkashi) and Gauchar (Chamoli) airstrips to the Indian Air Force. Similarly, the State government is planning to hand over the operation of the Pithoragarh airport to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in view of the increasing air traffic in this airport.
A memorandum of understanding for operation of the Pithoragarh airport will be inked soon between the State government and the AAI. The State government is also planning to expand the Pithoragarh airport at a cost of Rs 450 crore.
The government is also planning to construct a one-kilometre long airstrip at Gunji in Pithoragarh district for initiating air services in the Adi Kailash area. The technical support from IAF will also be sought for construction of this airstrip.
Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the expansion of the air network is needed in the border areas. This will also help in fulfilling the strategic requirements apart from catering to the needs of local people.
