92,994 new coronavirus cases, 514 deaths reported in 24 hours
India recorded 92,994 new coronavirus cases and 514 deaths in the last 24 hours on Saturday, the highest in six months. With this rate of growth, India could cross 1 lakh mark in the next three-four days. The previous Covid-19 daily count peak was around 98,000 in September.
Eight States, including Maharashtra, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh, have witnessed a steep rise in daily infections, accounting for 81.42 per cent of the total caseload.
Ten districts — Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur, Thane, Nashik, Bengaluru Urban, Aurangabad, Delhi, Ahmednagar and Nanded — account for 50 per cent of the total active caseload of the country.
The death toll at 514 in a day has been the highest since October 21. The jump in cases reported on Saturday was the highest since September 20 last year when 92,605 new infections were recorded in a span of 24 hours.
Corresponding to the rapid surge in cases, the number of active cases too have registered a steady increase for the 24th day in a row with the tally reaching 6,87,433, which is 5.32 per cent of the total infections. The recovery rate has further dropped to 93.36 per cent, the data stated.
The active caseload was the lowest at 1,35,926 on February 12 and comprised 1.25 per cent of the total infections. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 1,16,27,122, while the case fatality rate has dropped to 1.32 per cent, the Health Ministry data stated.
Eight States which witnessed a steep rise in daily new Covid-19 cases are Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh. In a day, there has been a net rise of 44,213 active cases.
Maharashtra has shown a nine-fold jump, the maximum increase in the number of active cases in the last two months. In percentage terms, Punjab has reported the maximum increase in active cases. Five States — Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Kerala and Punjab — cumulatively account for 77.3 per cent of the total active cases in the country. Maharashtra alone accounts for 59.36 per cent of the total active caseload of the country.
Six States accounted for 85.85 per cent of the new deaths. Maharashtra saw the maximum casualties (277) followed by Punjab with 49 daily deaths.
However, 13 States/UTs have not reported any Covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours. These are Odisha, Assam, Ladakh (UT), D&D & D&N, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Sikkim, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, A&N Islands and Arunachal Pradesh.
