Integrated efforts needed to end drug abuse: governor

The governor of Uttarakhand lieutenant general (Retd) Gurmit Singh has said that integrated efforts are needed by all sections of the society to prevent drug abuse. He said that drug abuse is a major concern for the society. The governor was addressing a State level workshop organised on the occasion of the International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking at Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) on Monday.

 The governor emphasised that public awareness is most important to prevent drug abuse in the society and exhorted the youngsters to keep away from the substance abuse by self control and strong will power.

 He opined that a dedicated and efficient police system would also be helpful to reduce the dangers of drug abuse in the society. The governor said that the administration, police and civil society should work in coordination to remove this menace.

He expressed confidence that educational, social, political and religious sectors would coordinate with one another to create awareness in the society against drugs and help in creating a society free from the drug abuse.

He expressed hope that the students attending the one day workshop held against drug abuse and illicit trafficking would take a pledge for creating a drug free society.

Speaking on the occasion, the Health minister Dhan Singh Rawat said that a massive public awareness drive is required to end this menace. He said that many effective measures have been taken by the government in this direction. The minister said that the State government has taken a target to make Uttarakhand free from drugs by the year 2025. He said that public cooperation is needed to achieve this target. The minister elaborated about different schemes of the State government on the occasion.

 The principal of GDMC Dr Ashutosh Sayana, additional secretary of health Amanpreet Kaur, registrar of HN Bahuguna Medical Education University Dr MK Pant and others attended the workshop.
