In protest against what it terms government sponsored irregularities, misuse of the government machinery and blatant use of muscle power by the ruling party in the recent Panchayat elections in Haridwar district, the Uttarakhand Congress would hold a protest near the office of City Magistrate (Devpura circle), Haridwar on October 10. The protest would be led by the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president, Karan Mahara. Informing about the protest plan, the general secretary organisation of the Uttarakhand Congress, Vijay Saraswat said that in the recent three tier Panchayati Raj elections in Haridwar, the ruling BJP engaged in gross irregularities from the time the reservation was finalised till the end of the election process. He said that apart from misuse of the government machinery and muscle power the BJP used money to influence the elections. He added that at many places the outcome was affected by recounting and false cases were registered against the Congress party workers. Putting the entire election process under cloud, the Congress leader claimed that BJP first of all pressurised the administration to change the reservation status as per its convenience and later used money in a brazen display of power. He said that when the Congress workers protested against the irregularities they were manhandled and false cases were registered against the Congress leaders.
He said that the working style of the Haridwar police during the elections clearly states that it was functioning on the directives of the BJP. He said that the PCC president Karan Mahara would lead the protest of Congress workers in Haridwar on October 10. The Congress party is demanding that a committee monitored by a judge of high court (HC) should be constituted to probe the charges of irregularities, misuse of government machinery, slapping of false charges on Congress workers and blatant display of money and muscle power in the Panchayat election of Haridwar.
