In a major breakthrough a few weeks ahead of the start of the seven-phase election process, the Special Task Force of Assam police, acting on a tip-off, arrested the alleged head of the dreaded international terrorist organisation International State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in India from Dhubri along the India-Bangladesh border. Importantly, he hails from Uttarakhand. The arrested accused was identified as Harish Ajmal Faruqi, an alumnus of Muslim Aligarh University. It is further learnt that an aide identified as Rehan was also arrested along with Faruqi. Police said that they had received information that two ISIS members who had been camping in Bangladesh were to cross over to India via Dhubri to carry out sabotage activities in poll-bound India.
Speaking on the matter, the senior superintendent of police Dehradun Ajai Singh said that Faruqi’s father who is hakim used to run a unani centre in Dalanwala in Dehradun, adding that Faruqi had not come to Dehradun for the past ten hours. His father had been questioned several times, police said, adding that the National Security Agency had come to Doon to investigate about the whereabouts of the fugitive ISIS member.
