Joshimath residents living under threat of land subsidence
The Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath Peeth demands immediate ban on all projects in the vicinity of the city

An atmosphere of fear prevails in the Joshimath city due to continued land subsidence which is escalating with every day. Almost all wards of the town have come under the ambit of subsidence due to which the people are forced to live under constant threat of a major disaster. On late Monday night a fresh spell of subsidence brought more areas under its influence in the city. The residential buildings of the JP Company in the Marwadi ward have also come under the threat of land subsidence. As a precautionary measure the district administration has shifted 27 families to the safer locations. On Wednesday a team of administration conducted an inspection of the affected places and listened to the grievances of the people. The famous Jyotirmath located in the city has also come under the influence of land subsidence. Many cracks have appeared in the buildings and the Laxmi Narayan temple due to which people residing in the nearby area are worried. Brahmchari Mukudanand of the Jyotirmath said that cracks have developed in the temple, its entrance and other areas of the campus. He said that the Peeth is the seat of the Adi Guru Shankaracharya and has great religious importance. He said that a control room of Jyotirmath Apada Sewalaya would soon be set up in the Peeth to help people. Expressing great concern on continued land subsidence, the Shankaracharya of the Jyotish Peeth, Swami Avimukteshwaranand has said that the State government should take immediate steps to address the issue. He said that immediate ban on all the under construction projects should be imposed in public interests and a team of technical experts should be deployed to study the issue. The media in charge of the Jyotirmath Brijesh Sati said that the Shankaracharya has demanded that the State government should take immediate action on the serious problem and all hydropower projects in the vicinity of the city should be stopped. It is pertinent to mention here that the Shankaracharya has already written a letter to the President of India on the issue.
