An elephant died from electrocution after coming in contact with an 11,000 KV power line in the Dineshpur area of Udham Singh Nagar on Monday night. The adult elephant had moved from the Tanda range of the Terai Central forest division towards Dineshpur when the incident occurred. Local residents of Jaynagar spotted the body of the elephant in the fields on Tuesday morning and informed the Forest department about it. The sub divisional forest officer Shashi Dev reached the site along with departmental personnel to inspect the scene of the mishap. A panel of three veterinary doctors conducted the post mortem of the pachyderm after which the carcass was buried. Dev informed that an 11,000 KV power line was hanging low above the farms in the village. The villagers had in the past informed the Power department about this but the necessary action was not taken. It is believed that the adult elephant estimated to be aged eight to 10 years was passing by this site on Monday night when he came in contact with the high tension power line resulting in fatal electrocution. The Forest department is probing the incident. A case is being lodged and action will be taken against those found guilty in the probe, Dev added.
