The Kanwad Yatra concluded after 12 days on Friday. The period saw over four crore Kanwadias arriving in Haridwar and other parts of Uttarakhand from various States this year. The police claimed that it was a challenging period to ensure Kanwad Yatra goes on while maintaining peace, law and order. However they added that the arrangements in all districts, especially in Haridwar, were much better than in the past years. “There were certainly some challenges for the police. Except for a few cases of vandalism, there was no major hurdle during Kanwad Yatra.
The traffic and parking systems were more efficient in Haridwar this time than last year. The authorities were more effective and organised this time compared to the previous year for which I congratulate the district administration and the district police. They planned the entire event really well,” the inspector general of police of the Garhwal region, KS Nagnyal said. He said that the police used to close highways and other major routes often during the Kanwad Yatra period but this time, the police did not need to close any highways or major roads due to advance preparations. The entry and exit of Kanwadias happened without disrupting many routes this time, he claimed.
The Haridwar senior superintendent of police Pramendra Singh Dobhal along with the district magistrate Dhiraaj Singh Garbyal also performed the ritual of taking Ganga water from Har Ki Paidi and offered it at the Daksha Prajapati Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple in Kankhal on the last day of the Kanwad Yatra. The SSP said that more than four crore Kanwadias carried Ganga water and safely returned to their destinations this year. He claimed that apart from minor incidents, the Kanwad Yatra concluded smoothly and all officials carried out their responsibilities with dedication and teamwork to ensure the successful completion of the fair.
Dobhal also honoured the super zonal and zonal in-charges of the Kanwad Mela with mementos. He also said that the police circle officer of Jwalapur, Shantanu Parashar, along with other personnel sustained injuries while on duty and they are receiving treatment in hospital. The Haridwar police are providing all possible assistance to them, he added.
