Thousands of Kanwadias embarked on their sacred journey on the first Monday of the holy month of Sawan despite the heavy rainfall to fetch holy Ganga water in Haridwar. Despite heavy rainfall in some areas, several Kanwadias could be seen carrying elaborately decorated Kanwads on their shoulders in several routes of Haridwar. They could be seen chanting as they made their way to the ghats to collect the sacred water. The local authorities including the police and the Municipal Corporation of Haridwar (MCD) said that they had anticipated the monsoon’s impact and had made extensive arrangements to ensure the safety and well-being of the pilgrims. The sanitation inspector in MCH Shrikant Chaudhary told The Pioneer that there was no prominent waterlogging in the city except in two locations including Chamgadad Tapu. The rainwater did not stay on roads for a long time as drains and roads are being regularly cleaned to prevent any blockage. He said that sanitation workers are working in three shifts to ensure proper cleanliness during the monsoon. The officials also said that temporary shelters were set up along the route, providing respite for those needing a break from the heavy rains. Besides this, medical facilities and emergency services were also on high alert, the officials said.
