Kedarnath MLA Shaila Rani succumbs to cancer,  cremation on Thursday

In latest news from Dehradun, the Kedarnath MLA and veteran BJP leader Shaila Rani Rawat (68) breathed her last at a private hospital in the city after battling cancer for a number of years. She was elected to the State Legislative Assembly from the prestigious Kedarnath seat twice-in 2012 and 2022. In the 2017 Assembly election, she, however, lost the seat to Congress’s Manoj Rawat. Thereafter, she was found suffering from cancer. But with her indomitable willpower, she plunged into the electoral battle again in 2022 and won the seat by defeating Rawat.  Notably, she started her political career humbly as a panchayat member.

The chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reached the State BJP headquarters in Balbir Road and placed a wreath on her body wrapped in the BJP flag. Expressing her deep sorrow over the death of the leader, he said she had always been vocal in the Assembly about the problems faced by the people of the constituency she represented. “She would take such matters promptly at the administrative levels and get the problems sorted out amicably,” he said, adding that she was particularly caring about the downtrodden section of the people, articulating their problems empathically though she was by nature a soft-spoken, mild-mannered leader. “Her death is an irreparable loss not just for BJP but for the State as well,” he further said.

The deceased leader’s brother Ajay Rana said that her mortal remains would be taken to her in-laws’ house in Rudraprayag where the cremation would be held on Thursday.
