The chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) Geeta Khanna has asked authorities at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay district hospital and the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital to provide prompt medical treatment to rape victims in the future. She said this following the alleged gangrape of a 16-year-old girl in Dehradun after which the district hospital and GDMC hospital management allegedly showed lack of sensitivity towards the victim.
Khanna said that she convened a meeting at the commission with the officials from the district hospital and GDMC hospital. During the meeting, she instructed the medical superintendent of the district hospital VS Chauhan to arrange an awareness programme on POCSO Act for the doctors at the hospital. Further, Khanna said that she has also requested the GDMC hospital officials to ensure that no rape victim is made to stand in queue while also ensuring the implementation of their zero billing policy. Additionally, she further directed that an attendant should be provided for disabled rape victims till the entire process is completed.
It will be recalled that in light of the insensitive treatment reportedly towards the alleged gangrape victim by the hospital, Khanna recently wrote a letter to the Health director general, urging that the medical facilities at the government hospitals should be supervised, especially in sensitive cases.
