The chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) Geeta Khanna instructed the schools to establish the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) committee in their respective schools. She issued this instruction while chairing a review meeting on Monday.

In the meeting, Khanna informed that it is a matter of concern that many schools are not adhering to the guidelines stated in the Right to Education (RTE) Act. She said that the commission has received numerous complaints from private schools about their lack of attention to following the guidelines. Regarding this, she has instructed school management to display the name of the parent-teacher association on the school gate and post documents related to the building’s map and fire safety on the notice board. Additionally, schools must ensure clean drinking water, sanitation facilities, sanitary napkins and medical provisions are in place, she added.

Khanna emphasised that schools need to comply with the regulations regarding the weight of school bags for children. Additionally, the school management should ensure to update the emergency contact numbers, she added.
